Re: [edlug] RAM failure

Well, I found a couple of old sticks of PC-100 RAM in the bottom of the bits box and once I put them in the system it was FAR happier.

I don't know what was wrong with the other RAM but *something* was screwey with it :)

I know an Athlon isn't going to be the best for economy but it's all I have at the moment until I can source some sort of older Pentium or the likes.

Having secured a /29 from plusnet, I finally decided to do something with the hardware under my bed and build myself a nice web/dns server and try out debian etch in the process.

I wouldn't use Debian for this. Have a look at Devil-Linux (http://www.devil-linux.org). It's a ram based system designed for public facing servers with security in mind.

Also be aware that if you're running a 24/7 server every watt it runs at will cost you about a pound per year in electricity. An Athlon is probably not the best choice for economy.

Being an Athlon 1GHz with 512MB of RAM, I was a bit confused when the debian installed claimed to be low on memory but I figured it may just have been a bug but apparently not - dmesg confirms that there is in fact no high memory beyond what is in the swap file.

Use memtest86 to check your memory. I'm surprised linux will run at all in 640K!
